Sugar Skull Lantern

Bring the spirit of dia de los Muertos into your home this October with these bright and colourful lanterns!

What you need:
Barker’s Fruit Compote Jar, washed and label removed
Acrylic paints in neon colours such as orange, red, green, yellow and blue
PVA Glue
A sponge brush
Metallic and coloured felt tip pens
A Day of the Dead skull print out

- First, tape your Sugar Skull print out to the inside of your jar. You’ll use this as a guide. Mix a ratio of ¼ pva to ¾ paint, and apply to your jar using a sponge brush. Use a different colour for the skull. Don’t worry if this layer looks thin, this is just the base layer that we’ll build on.

2.Once this layer is completely dry, continue to build up the paint, two or three coats should do (you don’t need to add PVA to your second and third coats.) TIP: Don’t paint the skull too opaque as you won’t be able to see your guide!

3. Once you’re happy with your finish, use a metallic pen to draw on the details of the sugar skull. If you’re finding it hard to see the guide under the paint, use the torch on your phone to shine inside the jar. Continue to add details with different coloured markers!

4. Finish with a trim, and use to display flowers or light the way with a battery or solar powered light.
