About Us

Barker's Foodstore & Eatery is built on the philosophy of creating experiences while engaging with our guests through our products, our menu and our special space.
Located in the former grounds of St Mary’s Vicarage in Geraldine, Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery is a purpose-built landmark with a beautiful product tasting and range viewing section combined with an innovative eatery menu incorporating products from Barker's of Geraldine and Barker’s Professional ranges, complemented by a selection of local New Zealand artisan products. We are proud to be working with some local businesses whose products and services have combined nicely with our product offering.
The concept of a Barker's Foodstore & Eatery had been talked about for a number of years and in 2019 - our 50th Birthday year - we were keen to make it a reality.
The Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery allows us to  introduce guests and visitors to our Barker’s of Geraldine and Barker’s Professional ranges by allowing them to freely taste via our complimentary ‘tasting’ stations and integrating them into our eatery menu to show people how they can use them at home or in their hospitality business, and then they can purchase them in our Foodstore.

We have designed the space to encourage interaction with our guests, to listen and learn from your feedback, about what you like, what you use, how you use it and what you would like to see in our range.  This will add value to our product development, open us up to new concepts and stretch our thinking. Feel free to explore our interaction stations.

The Eatery

The Eatery is full of energy and life, created as an engaging and inspiring place for guests to experience Barker wonders and connect or reconnect with one another over a seasonally inspired food and beverage menu.

Our menu has been crafted to consider the fresh ingredients we have access to locally and that complement our products from within the Barker's of Geraldine and Barker's Professional ranges. From local free-range eggs and cheeses to local salmon and artisan salami we are blessed with great taste sensations.

The Eatery seats 100 people inside and up to 50 on the veranda. We have highchairs for younger toddlers.

Personalised Products

Why not add a ‘special touch’ to a product by labelling it with your name or label it as a gift for someone special? Yes, our interactive iPad will allow you to make magic by creating a personalised product. Its all part of our special experience at the Foodstore.

Customised Gift Packs

Along with Barker's range of pre-made gift packs, our guests have the opportunity to build their own gift pack for a loved one from the range of Barker's products in the Foodstore.

Our Garden

We are excited to have the beautiful river walkway at our back door which will burst with colour when the rhododendrons bloom. It's not unusual for a keruru or native wood pigeon to fly on by or hear the call of the plentiful bellbirds which nestle in the sycamore trees.

Parking

At the Foodstore & Eatery we know how important it is that our guests find parking easy, so we have 21 car-parks surrounding us plus 3 car parks for disability permit holders.  The entrance and complex are wheelchair friendly. For larger vehicles, we recommend you use the public carparking available around the corner.

Sustainability at the Foodstore

From conception, we wanted to ensure that the Foodstore & Eatery reflected Barker's longstanding sustainability principles.

It started with choosing local partners from South Canterbury to design, build and furnish the Foodstore & Eatery, thus creating and maintaining local jobs.  We cleverly built in really design features that use our recycled Barker's of Geraldine Syrup bottles, making them into light fittings, as well as using local joiners to make all of our table holders, serving platters and crates using locally milled Macrocarpa wood. From there it was ensuring that we used local artisan food producers to supply our menus so that the food didn't travel too far to be enjoyed, and was grown and ripened in the lush valleys of this fertile region.

The food industry is unfortunately associated with large amounts of waste both in the packaging of food products and in the amount of food that is discarded. Our team at Barker's Foodstore & Eatery has been tenacious in ensuring that its footprint is minimal so our recycling and composting have reached new levels. The streaming of all waste and diversion from landfill is incredibly rewarding.
As an Eatery providing takeaway we have also been very mindful to choose environmentally responsible packaging. Most food containers can be recycled but often end up as landfill. Ensuring the majority of our packaging is biodegradable is integral to our waste management. All take home boxes and cutlery are manufactured from 100% sustainable sources such as sugar cane and cornstarch.
